    26 Upper Russell Street

26 Morocco Street, formerly Upper Russell Street, Bermondsey in 1976. The massive central masonry no doubt framed the original entrance when the building was in use as the Fleece Public House. Just visible behind the car at the bottom right of the picture is the entrance to the cellar. To the left can be seen part of one the four entrances to the Bermondsey Leather Market.
The existence of the pub has been documented from 1839 to 1923. Backing on to a fellmonger’s yard and surrounded by tanneries, life here during the summer months may not have been very pleasant. A brief history of the leather industry in Bermondsey can be found here: www.exploringsouthwark.co.uk
